Seasonal land-ice-flow variability in the Antarctic Peninsula

چکیده

Abstract. Recent satellite-remote sensing studies have documented the multi-decadal acceleration of Antarctic Ice Sheet in response to rapid rates ice-sheet retreat and thinning. Unlike Greenland Sheet, where historical, high-temporal-resolution satellite situ observations revealed distinct changes land-ice flow within intra-annual timescales, similar seasonal signals are limited Antarctica. Here, we use high-spatial- Copernicus Sentinel-1A/B synthetic aperture radar acquired between 2014 2020 provide first evidence for variability land ice feeding George VI Shelf (GVIIS), Peninsula. Our reveal a austral summertime (December–February) speed-up ∼0.06±0.005 m d−1 (∼ 22±1.8 yr−1) at, immediately inland of, grounding line glaciers nourishing shelf, which constitutes mean ∼15 % relative baseline (time-series-averaged) flow. These findings corroborated by independent, optically derived velocity obtained from Landsat 8 imagery. Both surface oceanic forcing mechanisms outlined as potential controls on this seasonality. Ultimately, our imply that and/or ocean may be driving accelerations at lines other vulnerable outlet around Assessing degree ice-flow such locations is important quantifying accurately Antarctica's future contribution global sea-level rise.

Variability in Sea-Ice Coverage and Ice-motion Dynamics in the PAL LTER Study Region West of the Antarctic Peninsula

Sea-ice conditions and kinematics are studied in the Palmer Long-Term Ecological Research (PAL LTER) study region west of the Antarctic Peninsula. Remote sensing data from ERS-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and Scatterometer (EScat) and from DMSP SSM/I, are used to study the influence of synoptic weather systems on sea-ice characteristics during July-August 1992. Weather records from Palmer S...
